1st Episode Review (Warning: Minor Spoilers to Follow):

Ao-Chan Can’t Study! starts with an outrageous sex gag that sets the tone right away. Ao-Chan is easily going to be one of this season’s most outrageous, offensive, and divisive sex comedies. This 1st Episode displays how uneven the show is likely to be, diving head first into absurd, outrageous and bordering on offensive material that’ll have audiences absolutely divided. Some jokes really work if you’re looking for shock value in your humor, and don’t mind things getting a little raunchy. But it’s also a series bound to make audiences uncomfortable.

The basic premise is a little more complicated than the synopsis above describes. Ao Horie is not only a young girl focused on her studies, but does so beneath the watchful eye of her ever perverted father, who even named her after the “Ao”(or O in english) face made during sexy times. Not only is her dad a big pervert, skewing Ao-Chan’s perception of men as a whole, but he also gets the idea that Ao-Chan is in the throws of love for her classmate, Kijima, and seems intent on spurring her towards romantic success.

Supportive dad of the year right here. Maybe TOO supportive.

Ao-Chan is at its best when its shocking, and straddling that line between funny and outright sexual harassment humor. It’s really going to heavily depend on your tolerance for ecchi based humor, which can and often strays right into the offensive. Ao-Chan is already a tad uneven, with certain sequences feeling a bit uncomfortable in the direction the series chooses to go. Other times it nails the shocking sexual humor right on the head, crafting immediately memorable scenes that stand out and really leave an impression.

Ultimately Ao-Chan Can’t Study! isn’t for anyone who outright dislikes ecchi based humor. But as far as Ecchi’s go there seemed few places in this episode that the humor was based around straight fan service, and instead offered more clever material that didn’t simply amount to “oh look we found a way to get tits and ass on screen.” Ao-Chan Can’t Study! is well worth a try for fans of raunchy comedy, and is already one of Spring’s top shorts to keep an eye on as this season develops.

Recommended: Ao-Chan Can’t Study! straddles the line between shocking sexual humor and outright uncomfortable material, but its highs make it well worth sifting through the more uneven sequences.
