The secret Terminator sequel you didn’t know was happening.

1st Episode Review (Warning: Minor Spoilers to Follow):

Tom: Cautious Hero had me poised for disappointment. The overly lengthy title warns that the series has a single, ongoing, overused gag and the truth is the character described in the very title is exactly that: A funny goof, but one not actually built for a half hour episode, let alone 1 full cour of anime. That said, Cautious Hero’s lead isn’t even the guy described. The show thankfully focuses on a much meatier, more comically diverse character: Ristarte the Goddess. It’s her frustration, infatuation and expressive reactions to Seiya’s one note personality that make Cautious Hero better than it truly has any right to be.

Linny: Ristarte is without a doubt the star of Cautious Hero. She radiates high energy and her over the top and expressive reactions add so much comedy quotient to the show. Her inner monologues and dialogue sparkle and shine thanks to her very talented voice actress, Toyosaki Aki (K-On, Noragami, Fairy Tail) who really injects life into the words. The interactions between her and Seiya, and his constant ability to flummox and frustrate her, form the crux of the episode and its humour. Though that also gives rise to whether this might end up being too repetitive and one note if its the go to joke for the entire series. Thankfully for now this set up provides plenty of laughs and Seiya’s unusual reactions to the situations he faces, especially when compared to most standard Isekai protagonists, makes for something unique and refreshing.

A goddess who isn’t afraid to take matters into her own hands.

Tom: Cautious Hero is totally going to depend on Ristarte and how versatile her humor can really be. Seiya himself is pretty predictable and it’s only in the episode’s final few moments that we get some truly good goofs based on his overly cautious (It’s honestly more like reluctant) nature. If Cautious Hero can keep up Ristarte’s high quality reaction faces, find ways to make Seiya’s one note personality shine, and offer up a few over avenues of humor it could remain as fun as its 1st episode the whole way through.

Linny: One episode in and it’s already heavily hinted that the female characters besides Ristarte might be serving up some serious eye candy for the male gaze as the first big female villain they face in this episode is practically undressed up top. Even Ristarte herself, while modest for the most part, is still in a dress that highlights her bosom area. It’s something to take note of if you intend to watch Cautious Hero and such skimpy outfits could be problematic for you, either because you personally do not like it or you might feel awkward being seen watching it by others. If you’ve been hoping for an unusual Isekai tale, Cautious Hero is definitely something I would recommend putting on your watch list. Even if you’re not a fan of Isekai, as long as you enjoy anime that uses extremely ridiculous reaction faces for comedy, you may still want to give this show a chance.

Recommended: Cautious Hero: The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious is, surprisingly, more versatile than its one joke title.

Recommended: Cautious Hero kicks off with plenty of laughs thanks to an unusual protagonist and an extremely expressive female lead.
